Transport funding cuts affect the elderly and disabled

THE ELDERLY and the disabled will soon experience a change in the way they travel.

The government has reduced funding in the countries travel scheme leaving districts with less money to put into their own travel fund. This means that the free bus travel that the elderly and disabled currently enjoy will see a cut in the times they are able to travel.

John Martin, 47, a bus driver said: “This doesn’t affect me because I’m not disabled, I’m not elderly and I don’t get the bus very often. I understand how it would annoy a lot of people in the city though.

“I suppose when I am older and I’m not able to drive it would affect me. I won’t like the idea of not being able to go out at a certain time.”

Passes will only be accepted from 9.30am to 11pm Monday to Friday and all day at weekends and on bank holidays.

Margaret Collins, 73, from Herne Bay explained: “I was angry when I heard about this. I like to travel to Canterbury to go shopping and I like to go early. I would normally get the bus at 9am but these cuts mean I can’t do that anymore.”

Not only will the times of travel change but travel vouchers or a contribution towards a railcard will no longer continue, this will clearly affect a lot of people that live in the city that rely on the bus to get around.
